4 Minute Read: Are you doing it wrong?

The days are long, weeks are short, and you’re moving in a slow motion blur. Anxiety, fear, and frustration are eating you up on the inside as the light at the end of this quarantine tunnel is present, but we’re still not quite sure how much longer we have left. Who knows what the world will look like when this is all ‘over’.  Combine that with the stress of going to work: as an essential worker, home, or being unemployed; it can seem that things are out of our control.

There are countless articles out there that discuss how to gain more control of your life and how you should make health and fitness a priority during a time like this. Although I absolutely agree with that sentiment, I do believe that there is another way to look at it (I learned this from my mentors).  Introducing the “non-negotiables”. These are things that you do/have, for which you stop at nothing to accomplish, everyday.

Take a moment right now and think about what are your non-negotiables. Is it your job? Is it taking care of your kids? Maybe it’s having that glass of wine at the end of the day? You’ll notice that you have the bandwidth for only a few of them. 

Now write down a list of things that you ‘should be doing’ or “should do’s”. There’s probably an endless list of things you ‘should be doing’, however, most of the time they get lost in our daily activities and stressors.

If you want to make a change, swap one of your “non negotiables” with a “should do”. It’s a simple action, but it won’t be easy. You’ll have urges to go back to old ways because it is easier; but remind yourself that it’s to benefit you.
